Volcanic eruptions in 1996
REGIONS 9 and 10: KURILES, KAMCHATKA & MAINLAND ASIA
Alaid: An explosive eruption occurred in early December, but there are no detailed reports available as of May 1997. Alaid last erupted vigorously in 1981.
Karymsky: A large eruption began on 1 January 1996, initially involving an eruption center in nearby Karymsky lake and a new vent near the summit crater of Karymsky, inactive since early 1982. The lacustrine eruption center ceased erupting after one day, but Strombolian activity with occasional lava effusion continued during all of 1996 and into 1997.
Bezymianny: Dome growth with small explosions continued at varying intensity through 1996.
Kliuchevskoi: Minor ash emissions occurred frequently after November 1996.
