Volcanic eruptions in 1996

REGION 15: SOUTH AMERICA

  • Sangay: no reports of activity from this remote volcano are available for 1996 (following a report describing activity in November-December 1995), but it is assumed that the characteristic Strombolian activity initiated in 1934 is continuing.
  • Sabancaya: No reports were received about the activity of this remote volcano in 1996, but it is likely that Vulcanian explosions continued, probably all year round. The eruption began in 1990.
  • Llaima: A small ash emission occurred on 15 March 1996. This event was not reported in the GVN Bulletin.
  • Villarrica: persistent lava spattering and lava pond activity has continued since the end of the last major eruption, in 1984-1985. A major subsidence of the magmatic column in the summit crater occurred in early September and was followed by phreatic ash emissions on 14 September. During October and November, there was again vigorous lava pond activity with frequent bomb ejections above the summit.
