Volcanic eruptions in 1995

REGION 6: INDONESIA & ANDAMAN ISLANDS

  • Sorikmarapi: Airline pilots reported "smoke" to 10 km altitude near the volcano on 5 May, but there was no confirmation of volcanic activity from other sources.

  • Marapi: No reports about this volcano are available for 1996, but probably occasional Vulcanian explosions continue in an eruption that began in 1987.
  • Kerinci: Indonesia's highest volcano had minor ash emissions in August-September, in its first reported eruptive activity since 1969-1970 (an eruption in 1971 remains questionable).

  • Krakatau: Renewed activity was reported in July 1996, after several months of inactivity. Lava flows entered the sea on the W coast, leading to growth of the island of Anak Krakatau. After August, there was no more lava emission, but explosive activity continued through the remainder of 1996 and into 1997 (activity is reported as recently as May 1997).
  • Merapi: Several episodes of accelerated dome growth and intense pyroclastic flow activity were reported in 1996, the most significant in late October-early November. At the height of the latest activity,
  • Semeru: Vulcanian explosions and viscous lava extrusion with frequent collapse events triggering glowing avalanches continued through 1996 in an eruption that began in 1967.
  • Soputan: Beginning in April 1996, pilot reports indicated increased activity of Soputan, and renewed growth of the summit dome began in September, spilling over the rim of the crater and forming small lava flows on the upper flanks.
  • Ruang: Airline pilots reported a plume from this volcano on 27 June, but no eruption was reported from other sources. Ruang has been the site of several violent eruptions in the past few centuries, including devastating pyroclastic flows and formation of lava domes and flows, the most recent eruption was in 1949.
  • Karangetang: Eruption noises and ejections of incandescent material was reported in November and December, following an increase in seismic activity in late October. Karangetang is very active, with small to moderate eruptions almost every year. The latest major eruption in May 1992 killed six persons (by pyroclastic flows).
  • Dukono: Although no reports about 1996 activity from this remote volcano are available, continuous Strombolian-Vulcanian activity probably occurred throughout 1996, in an eruption that began in 1933.
