REGION 4: NEW ZEALAND TO FIJI

  • Ruapehu: Following about 7 months of no eruptive activity, Ruapehu erupted again on 17 June. During the next six weeks, ash emissions alternated with spectacular bomb emissions and Strombolian bursts. Ash falls frequently disrupted air traffic and the ski season on the mountain. The latest minor ash emissions occurred on 1 September 1996.
