Volcanic eruptions in 1995
REGION 8: JAPAN, TAIWAN & MARIANAS
Suwanose-jima: occasional explosive eruptions continued in 1995. The activity is Strombolian-Vulcanian and continues since 1949.
Sakura-jima: Vulcanian explosions continue from the active summit crater at a rate of several tens per month. This kind of activity has persisted, with fluctuations, since late 1955. Before, eruptions from this volcano were separated by much longer repose periods and occurred from flank eruptive centers, producing large volumes of lava together with pyroclastics, such as in 1914 and 1946.
Unzen: the eruption that began in late 1990 ended in February 1995 when virtually all dome growth stopped. Since then, only weak fumarolic activity occurs from a few places on the newly emplaced lava dome.
Aso: frequent ejections of mud and water occurred from the active vent in Naka-dake crater, and one ash emission occurred on 17 March. This activity is continuing since early 1992 but has been stronger during its first year.
Kuju: small phreatic eruption began after at least 267 years of repose on 11 October. Minor ash emissions occurred sporadically through the end of the year, showing a small magmatic component.
Yake-dake: phreatic explosion from a vent about 2 km SE from the summit killed 4 people on 11 February. The volcano had its last significant eruption in 1962-1963.
Fukutoku-Okanoba: frequent occurrence of discolored water above this submarine volcano indicates strong fumarolic, and maybe slight eruptive activity. This volcano occasionally erupts explosively, forming ephemeral islands, most recently in January 1986.
Ruby Seamount: a submarine eruption occurred in mid to late October, possibly causing significant growth of the submarine edifice towards the sea surface. The volcano has had only one previously recorded eruption, in 1966.
