Volcanic eruptions in 1995

REGION 4: NEW ZEALAND TO FIJI

  • White Island: minor phreatic explosions early in 1995. The volcano is erupting intermittently since 1986.
  • Ruapehu: increasingly powerful phreatic-phreatomagmatic eruptions from summit crater lake through summer 1995; major phreatomagmatic-magmatic eruptions in late September-late October, ejecting the crater lake and causing numerous lahars and widespread ash falls. The eruption subsided in late October, and possible dome growth occurred. However, no major dome has formed, and a new lake has formed within the crater. The 1995 activity is the most significant since a major eruption in 1945 when a large lava dome was emplaced in the crater. The dome was virtually completely removed by explosive activity in a later stage of that eruption.
  • Metis Shoal: an eruption in June formed a new island at this submarine and sporadically emergent volcano. Departing from previous eruptions, lava was extruded in the 1995 eruption, forming a broad, flat dome that may be more resistent to erosion. Since late June, no info is available about the volcano. The most recent pre-1995 eruption, in the summer of 1979, formed a flat island consisting of tephra that was rapidly washed away by wave erosion.
