Volcanic eruptions in 1995
REGION 6: INDONESIA & ANDAMAN ISLANDS
Barren Island: eruption continued since December 1994. Activity was characterized by Strombolian activity and lava emission, similar to an eruption in 1991. The activity apparently ended in late June, but aviation reports on 2 December indicate possible renewed activity.
Marapi: occasional Vulcanian explosions continue since 1987.
Krakatau: Vulcanian activity, inititated in March 1994, continued through much of 1995. On 6 November, only vigorous steaming was observed. The current eruptive period began in November 1992 but no activity occurred from October 1993 until March 1994. Major morphological changes on the growing cone of Anak Krakatau have occurred.
Merapi: dome growth with occasional collapse of its flanks triggering glowing avalanches continues since early 1992. Glowing avalanches descend on the volcano's south side since late 1994, a sector not affected by eruptions for more than 30 years.
Semeru: Vulcanian explosions and viscous lava extrusion with frequent collapse events triggering glowing avalanches continue since 1967. Major pyroclastic flows formed in July and October 1995, reaching more than 7 km from the summit, and numerous small avalanches occurred in November and December.
Bromo (Tengger Caldera): small ash emissions began in early March and ended in late May; similar activity occurred in October.
Raung: unconfirmed activity occurred in October.
Rinjani: unconfirmed activity occurred in October.
Soputan: Earthweek reports an eruption on 19 July that caused widespread damage and killed one person. No reports about this eruption have appeared in other sources. A GVN report indicates slightly increased activity in November-December, involving increased incandescence fromt eh 1991-1993 summit lava dome.
Karangetang: Eruption noises and ejections of incandescent material was reported in November and December, following an increase in seismic activity in late October. Karangetang is very active, with small to moderate eruptions almost every year. The latest major eruption in May 1992 killed six persons (by pyroclastic flows).
Dukono: continuous Strombolian-Vulcanian activity from this remote volcano continues without interruptions since 1933.
