Saturday 24 August 1996

It will take several days until you will see the new Calbuco home page, but by clicking on the image at left, you will get a large (70k JPG) image of the Plinian eruption column of the March 1961 eruption of that poorly known volcano in Southern Chile. This photo (a WWW-first!) and others have been submitted by Werner Keller (again!), and more will soon appear on these pages.

Thursday 22 August 1996

Werner Keller has submitted another spectacular photo of Villarrica's 1971 eruption, taken by Chilean resident Mrs. Hennecke. Next Chilean volcano to be added to these pages will be Calbuco (stay tuned for exciting photos!)
Mike Lyvers has submitted photos from his recent trip to Vanuatu for which there is not yet a page ready, but you may already share my joy looking at them. By the way, compare the views of Ambrym's active lava lake with those of the one in Villarrica! There are photos of:

Wednesday 21 August 1996

After a one-month break, mirroring of this site at MTU has resumed. Thus, getting connected with the most up-to-date versions of these pages from the U.S. has again become much more convenient. Mirroring will also be back to normal at the Italian mirror at VOL within the next few days.

Thursday 8 August 1996

Geomar was off-line from 26 July until 2 August 1996. During this time the Geomar WWW server could not be reached from the outside world, and in turn, we did not receive mail here. During the next few days, the situation will gradually return to normal, but additions to these pages will only be visible on the MTU and VOL mirrors for some time.
New photos have been added about the 1948-1949 and 1971-1972 eruptions of Villarrica volcano, Chile.
A link has been made to a nice new page about Monte Nuovo volcano, Campi Flegrei (but this is in Italian!).

Added photos of Heimaey after the 1973 eruption, kindly supplied by Amy Clifton.
Some photos have also been added to the Roccamonfina page, but written text is still lacking on that page.
Avachinsky, together with its less active neighbor Koryaksky, has been declared one of now sixteen Decade volcanoes. Stay tuned for more on this on these pages.

The new Villarrica volcano homepage has been extended with spectacular photos and text submitted by Werner Keller, and a new page about Villarrica's 1971-1972 eruption has been added. The images presented on this page show the effect of lava flows onto and through glacial ice, and there are not even similar photos available of that eruption elsewhere.
Text and images have been supplied by L. Giacomelli and R. Scandone about a poorly known Quaternary volcano in Italy, Ventotene.

Added links to reports and spectacular photos about Karymsky volcano in the Global Volcanism Network Bulletin. Some of the photos are textbook quality portraits of phreatomagmatic and Vulcanian activity.

A photo of the November 1975 lava flow of Stromboli has been added. This photo was originally published by Capaldi et al. (1978) in Bulletin Volcanologique.
A spectacular photo mosaic of the crater of Vesuvio has been added to the top of the May 1996 image gallery of Vesuvio.
New images of Pollara have been added to the Salina page.
A preliminary page has been set up of Villarrica volcano, Chile.
Photos of various cones and craters of Etna are presented.

Added a beautiful photo of Villarrica with a small dome fountain filling its active intracrateral vent. The photo was taken by Werner Keller who will soon feature more spectacularly on these pages.
