What was new on BB's volcano home page in April, May and June 1996?

Saturday 29 June 1996

Some changes have been made on the tops of some of the Italian Volcano Pages (see for instance, the Ischia page), and new links to very spectacular sites have been added to the Hekla and Heimaey pages. These links still have to be added to the "Other Sites" Pages.

Tuesday 25 June 1996

A new preliminary page about Pantelleria volcanic island, Italy has been set up; more info and photos will soon be added. There is also a volcano-tectonic map of Linosa volcanic island, Italy, but written info is not yet available.
Images of Vulcanello have been added to the Vulcano page.

Monday 24 June 1996

The clickable map of the major Italian volcanoes has been substituted by a larger and much more sophisticated map, with all major Italian volcanic centers being displayed. Pages of some volcanoes previously not featured are under construction; some info is already available about the poorly known Monte Amiata and Monte Vulture volcanoes (in the Tuscany and Basilicata regions, respectively).

Thursday 20 June 1996

Observations of the activity of Stromboli (9-12 June) and Etna (26 May-3 June) including a description of NE Crater by Marco Fulle have been posted. Photos taken by Marco Fulle will soon be posted on these pages.
A geological map (from Orsi et al. 1996) has been added to the Ischia page.
Images have been added to Sabatini volcanic complex, and new references have been added for the Central Italian volcanoes.
A single distant image is available of one of Italy's least known volcanoes, Monte Vulture, situated east of Vesuvio. The photo was taken on 3 May 1996. More info is to be supplied soon.
A press photo has been added of a 1971 lava flow at Stromboli which appears on the page describing the activity between 1930 and 1985. A photo of the 1975 lava flow will be added soon.

Finally there is a clickable map of the major Italian volcanoes presented here!
Slight additions have been made on the page presenting the geology of Stromboli.

Tuesday 18 June 1996

A gallery of historical images of Vesuvio has been set up, largely replacing the "1631-1944 cycle" page.
Several historical images of Etna and a page with images of a visit to the 1974 cones and lava flows have been posted.

Sunday 16 June 1996

New images of Vesuvio (May 1996) are now available, showing the volcano and its crater 52 years after the most recent eruption.

Wednesday 12 June 1996

The eruptive history of Vesuvio has been extended: The activity from 1632 until 1794 is now described in detail. Links to images will be made in the next few days, and more eruption descriptions are to follow.
The photos of Vesuvio announced on the "aerial views of Vesuvio" page are now available as higher-resolution gif files (but caution, they're LARGE): Aerial view from NW (360 k) and Aerial view from SSW (480 k).
A brief description of the Monte Nuovo eruption (1538) in the Campi Flegrei has been set up.
There is also a very incomplete page about Ischia volcanic complex.
A large but detailed topographic map of Stromboli island (360 k gif) has been added.

A new Introduction Page has been set up. It contains a few new animated gifs that have not been put on the home page to avoid interference with other special effects.

Wednesday 5 June 1996

Added a new List of activity from 1631 until 1944 which has been contributed by Roberto Scandone, Roma (the page is not yet fully edited). This page has lots of links to new historical images of the volcano!
New spectacular aerial views of Vesuvio are available on a separate page.
A A geological map of the Colli Albani and their surroundings and a brief summary of the volcanic history of the Colli Albani have been placed in the Central Italian Volcanoes Page.

The summary of Stromboli's activity in 1996 has been updated, following a strong explosion in the previous night.

Friday 31 May 1996

Added a new page about the geological framework of the Eolian Islands.
Added a November 1995 photo of Unzen volcano (Japan), supplied by Tatsuro Chiba which can be found at the bottom of the Komagatake page.
Completed the Eruption list of Vesuvio.
Updated the Other Sites Pages, including links to a page with spectacular photos of Popocatépetl in eruption and an on-line publication about Cotopaxi volcano, Ecuador.
A preliminary page about another notorious Italian volcano, Campi Flegrei (still without images) can be viewed as well.
A Web-counter has been installed on the title page (as early as 1 May 1996).

Checked all files for mislinks and made corrections. The files (with the mislinks) were readable for Netscape 1.1, but not for Netscape 2.01; now they should also display perfectly well on Netscape 2.0 and later.
All files have now links back to the main pages (see top of this page with links to the Main Index and to the Home Page).
Added a page about the 1994 eruption of Llaima, Chile.
Added a page about Popocatépetl and its eruption in the 1920's.
Added an image of Etna's 1892 eruption.
Added a photo of the 1991 eruption of Hekla, Iceland.
