Where to go look at lavas

There are many places to see the Portage Lake Volcanics! You could easily spend more than a week in the field, and still see be seeing new features. Shorelines and river valleys are prime sites where the vegetation is less obscuring. Isle Royale has lots of wave-washed shoreline.

We suggest you go to the boulder garden first to tune your eyes for what the local rocks look like--you will get a good look at the whole variety of lavas, conglomerates and sandstones there, so you are ready for the field sites.
