Puntiagudo volcano, Chile

location: 40.969°S, 72.264°W

Puntiagudo main cone

The eroded main cone of Puntiagudo seen from Lago Rupanco (west of the volcano) in January 1996. This edifice was constructed during the Pleistocene and strongly altered by glacial activity; there is no evidence of Holocene activity in this part of the volcano. Note large erosional cirque on near flank of the volcano. Photo by Werner Keller.

Flank cinder cone

Puntiagudo is listed as an historically active volcano, but the advanced erosion of the main edifice precludes any Holocene activity there. The most probable area of recent activity is "Cordón Cenizos" on the lower south (?) flank of the volcano where youthful cinder cones are located. This one was photographed by Werner Keller in January 1996 from Lago Rupanco (to the west of the volcano). A lava flow extends from behind the cone.
