                        MONTSERRAT- VOLCANIC ACTIVITY
                     DHA- GENEVA INFORMATION REPORT NO.12
                               31 AUGUST 1995

  1.    ACCORDING  TO  THE  CARIBBEAN  DISASTER  EMERGENCY  RESPONSE AGENCY
(CDERA),  A  HIGH  ALERT STATUS IS BEING MAINTAINED AS TWO ADDITIONAL VENTS
HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED IN THE MONTSERRAT  VOLCANO.

  2.      THE  SCIENTIFIC  TEAM  WORKING  AT  MONTSERRAT CONTINUES TO
  BELIEVE THAT THE ONGOING UNREST COULD RESULT IN A MAGMATIC ERUPTION
  IN THE NEAR FUTURE (AND NOT A MAJOR ERUPTION AS REFERRED IN  PARA 1
  OF DHA INFORMATION REPORT NO. 11).

  3.      APPROXIMATELY  4,000  EVACUEES ARE STILL BEING SHELTERED IN
  THE  SAFE  AREA  IN  THE NORTHERN PART OF THE ISLAND. FOOD IS BEING
  PROVIDED FOR AN ESTIMATED 5,000 PERSONS.

  4.      CDERA  COORDINATING  UNIT  IS FACILITATING THE PURCHASE AND
  DELIVERY  OF SHELTER MATERIAL AND FOOD SUPPLIES FOR MONTSERRAT WITH
  BRITISH FINANCING AND CONTRIBUTIONS FROM PARTICIPATING STATES.

  5.      THE  PAN  AMERICAN  HEALTH  ORGANIZATION  (PAHO)  HAS  BEEN
  INVOLVED  SINCE  THE  BEGINNING OF THE ERUPTION, COLLABORATING WITH
  CDERA IN RESPONSE ACTION AND PROVIDING LISTS OF ESSENTIAL DRUGS AND
  SUPPLIES, HEALTH MESSAGES FOR THE POPULATION AND WRITTEN GUIDELINES
  FOR  THE  MEDIA  ON  THE  VOLCANIC  ACTIVITY. AT THE REQUEST OF THE
  MINISTER  OF  HEALTH  OF MONTSERRAT, PAHO PREPARED MEDICAL SUPPLIES
  FOR  A  SPEEDY  DISPATCH  TO  MONTSERRAT  IF  NECESSARY.  PAHO ALSO
  DISPATCHED  TWO  SUMA  TEAM  MEMBERS TO BE PART OF THE INTER-AGENCY
  COORDINATION  TEAM  IN  ANTIGUA  FOR  LOGISTIC  SUPPORT IN SUPPLIES
  MANAGEMENT.  TWO  STAFF  MEMBERS  FROM  THE  EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
  DISASTER RELIEF COORDINATION PROGRAM (PED) ARE PRESENTLY IN ANTIGUA
  AND  MONTSERRAT  IN ORDER TO REVIEW PREPAREDNESS PLANS AND POSSIBLE
  FURTHER ASSISTANCE.

  6.     AS AGREED BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENTS OF ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA AND
  THE  UNITED  KINGDOM, BRITISH MARINES ARE BEING DEPLOYED TO ANTIGUA
  TO  ASSIST  IN  THE  WORK  TO  BE  DONE TO THE POTENTIAL EVACUATION
  FACILITIES.
