Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Morning Report
Report for the period 16:00 8 December
to 07:00 9 December 1996
The current alert level is ORANGE

Activity has been low overnight. There were no VT earthquakes, one rock avalanche from Galway's Wall and two rockfalls from the dome. Galways Wall is still very unstable and may collapse without warning. A major collapse of the wall could expose hot, gas-rich magma from the lower sections of the dome, and trigger a lateral blast. All residents of Montserrat are should follow the alert procedures. The revised risk map is still in operation and there is no access into Zone A/B. Access to zone C/D is restricted to short visits for essential purposes.

The crater area was obscured by clouds this morning. An inspection of the dome will be made as soon as visibility improves.
