Morning Report
Report for the period 16:00 23 November
to 07:00 24 November 1996
The current alert level is AMBER

The alert level is Amber. Rockfalls from the October 1 dome continue to occur and the volcano remains in a dangerous state. The level of activity could increase at any time. More rockfalls can be expected during the next few days, and the threat of pyroclastic flows means that the Tar River and Long Ground areas are very dangerous. People must not enter these areas.

Several rockfalls occurred overnight. Most of these were of similar size to those recorded during the last few days. One rockfall, at 04:37, was considerably larger. No earthquakes have been recorded.

The volcano was very clear this morning. There was moderate steaming from the dome, with a plume rising to about 6,000 ft above sea level. A dome survey and COSPEC measurements are already underway.
