Montserrat Volcano Observatory
Morning Update
0700H 12 June, 1996
Seismographs at the MVO recorded no marked change in the level of activity
at the Soufriere Hills Volcano since 4:00 pm on June 11 1996. Small-to
moderate-size rockfall signals continue to dominate the records. There
was an period of low amplitude broad band tremor which started at about
11:00 pm and lasted about 30 minutes. The tremor resumed about 4:30 am and
is still going on with slightly increased amplitude. Broadband tremor is
usually interpreted as increase in the level of venting at the volcano.
This moderate increase in venting activity may be caused by the
interaction between the water from the overnight showers and the hot dome
material.
Low cloud during the late afternoon and early morning prevented views of
all but the lower flanks of the volcano. The MVO staff believe that the
volcano remains in the same heightened state of activity as yesterday. The
danger level on the upper western side of the volcano and in Tar river and
Long Ground is extremely high so these areas should not be entered under
any circumstances. Visits to the evacuated zone should be kept to a
minimum. People who fail to comply with these warnings will put themselves
at direct risk of serious injury or horrible death.
