Morning Update
0700H 17 May, 1996

Volcanic activity at the Soufriere Hills volcano during the night has been at a lower level than that observed during the day time. Seismicity continues to be dominated by small- to moderate-sized rockfall signals. There were a few small hybrid events and small long period events. Variable periods of broadband tremor has also been recorded throughout the night.

Low cloud cover continue to obscure the top of the volcano and no clear views were obtained from the Observatory or Brambles Airport.

The MVO still views the situation at the Soufriere Hills Volcano with grave concern and the scientists continue to urge that visits to the evacuated zone be kept to a minimum. The Tar River, Long Ground and Whites areas are extremely dangerous, and should not be entered under any circumstances.
