Report for the period 16:00 on 9 Jan. 1996
to 16:00 on 10 Jan. 1996

Seismicity dropped to a relatively low level through this period, with broadband tremor absent and the small, repetitive long period events recorded at Gages only until 02:00 on 10 December. The frequent hybrid events seen on most stations yesterday were considerably reduced during this period. A total of five (5) events were recorded at locations scattered through the south of the island at depths of 1 to 4 km. A small regional earthquake was recorded at 17:10 on 9 January; this was located about 100 km from Montserrat and had a magnitude of 2.8.

EDM measurements were made today on the lines from White's Yard and Long Ground to Castle Peak. No change was noted from previous occupations.

Visual observations of the crater were made from the helicopter this morning during a brief period of good visibility. The growth of a dome with at least one spine was noted in the northwestern part of the lava dome; this had grown over the past 24 to 36 hours.

In the return football match between MVO and Police played late this afternoon, the final score was 5-4 to the Police team, after a late winner as the sun was setting.
