Daily Report
Report for the period 16:00 on 2 Jan. 1996
to 16:00 on 3 Jan. 1996

Six (6) volcano-tectonic earthquakes were located during this period at depths in the range 0 to 5 km. These events were scattered in the southern part of Montserrat: two north of St. George's Hill, two in the Windy Hill/ Harris' area and two beneath the Soufriere Hills volcano. Fourteen (14) long period events were recorded by most of the seismic stations in the network. Several episodes of short duration, low amplitude, broadband tremor and a few small long period events were also recorded by the Gages seismic station. One small regional earthquake of magnitude about 3.0 was recorded at 20:48 on 02 January and occurred approximately 100 km from Montserrat.

The EDM lines between Castle Peak, Long Ground and White's Yard were again measured today. None of these lines showed any change above the error of the method.

Visual observations made today from the helicopter and from a few locations on the ground suggest that dome growth rates still remain relatively low.
