Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 5 p.m. 6 January 1999
to 5 p.m. 7 January 1999

Activity at the volcano has remained low during the reporting period. There were 12 rockfall signals, 10 volcano-tectonic earthquakes, 1 hybrid earthquake and 1 long-period event recorded over the past 24 hours.

There was an episode of volcanic tremor overnight between 0400 and 0430 of the type usually associated with ash venting. A large long period earthquake immediately preceded the tremor episode. At 1149 there was a pyroclastic flow down the eastern flanks of the volcano in the Tar River valley. The flow travelled halfway down the Tar River. The ash cloud from the flow remained at a low level and was carried WNW over Plymouth and the Cork Hill area and out to sea.

Residents of Montserrat are advised to keep listening to ZJB Radio Montserrat for information relating to any further developments in the state of the volcano.
