Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 5 p.m. 26 September
to 5 p.m. 27 September 1998

Activity at the volcano was slightly higher today. Seimsic stations close to the volcano recorded above background levels of tremor. The activity is still very low however with 11 rockfall signals and 9 volcano-tectonic earthquakes.

Temperature measurements were made in the mudflow and pyroclastic flow deposits around Trants this afternoon. The surface of the deposits has been extensively reworked by the heavy rain during the hurricane. Temperatures down to around 1.8 metres (6 feet) were all close to 100 degrees centrigrade indicating the depth to which the rain water permeated. During the hurricane 15 centimetres (6 inches) of rain fell at the observatory. The maximum temperature recorded was 285 degrees centrigrade. The potential for generating hot mud flows is still present and people should keep away from the deposits, valley bottoms and flood plain areas during heavy rain.

Residents of Montserrat should continue to check Radio ZJB in case of further sudden developments in the state of the volcano.
