Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 5 p.m. 1 September
to 5 p.m. 2 September 1998

Over the last 24 hours 10 rockfall signals and 3 volcano-tectonic earthquakes were recorded at the volcano.

The GPS survey of the volcano and surrounding area continued today and an occupation of the site at South Soufriere Hills will run overnight. In addition, the distance between Windy Hill and the north crater rim of the volcano was measured using the Electronic Distance Meter. This line continues to show the lengthening and relaxing trend of recent months.

A site was prepared today in the St Patricks area for the installation of a seismometer. The original seismometer at St Patricks was destroyed during the large collapse on 26 December 1997.

Dust levels were low at all sites today.

Residents should continue listening to Radio Montserrat in case there are sudden developments in the state of the volcano.
