Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 5 p.m. 16 June
to 5 p.m. 17 June 1998

The level of activity has remained at a low level. The seismic network has recorded 2 rockfalls signals and 2 volcano-tectonic earthquakes today.

A diffuse gas haze was observed over Chances Peak this afternoon, and intense steam venting could be seen on the northern flanks of the dome. This is most likely a result of the heavy rain over the last few days percolating through the hot dome material.

Today, dust levels were low at all instrumented sites except MVO in Mongo Hill where local levels were slightly raised.

Residents are reminded that the volcano remains in a potentially active state and that the loose deposits are readily mobilised by heavy rain. Residents should continue listening to Radio Montserrat in case there are sudden changes.
