Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Morning Report
Report for the period 6 pm 2 May
to 7 am 3 May 1998

The level of volcanic activity remained low overnight.

There were a number of very small volcano-tectonic earthquakes throughout the night. Volcano-tectonic earthquakes may be caused by small movements along a system of fractures at 2 to 3km below the summit of the dome. There were also several small rockfalls in the early hours of the morning. Most of these rockfalls occurred during and immediately after a period of heavy rain which probably loosened some material on the surface of the dome. These heavy showers also triggered a small mudflow.

Much of the volcano is covered by cloud this morning.

Residents are reminded that the volcano remains in an active state, and that they should continue listening to Radio Montserrat in case the present quiet situation at the volcano changes suddenly.
