Daily Report
Report for the period 6 pm 28 February
to 6 pm 1 March 1998

The level of volcanic activity over the last twenty four hours has been low.

Seismicity has been dominated by rockfall signals. Between 16:00 yesterday and 16:00 today, 2 hybrid earthquakes, 4 volcano-tectonic earthquake, 9 long period earthquake and 23 rockfall signals were recorded on the seismic network. Rockfall activity was scattered throughout the day.

Closer study of yesterdays pyroclastic flow deposits revealed that the flows were composed of older material from the base and sides of the October 22nd dome. However, this material is clearly still hot enough to generate pyroclastic flows. Activity on the northern face would appear to be consistent with EDM measurements of the movement of peak B.

Theodolite measurements have been made from sites around the volcano over the weekend. These measurements should allow an estimate of dome volume.

Several of the dust monitoring sites were affected by a power cut today but the 15 hour average at these sites was low. Measurements at the remaining sites were low.

Residents are reminded to remain alert and listen to ZJB radio.
