Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Morning Report
Report for the period 6 pm 27 February
to 7 am 28 February 1998

The level of volcanic activity overnight was low.

There were a small number of rockfalls during the night and at 9.14pm there was a small pyroclastic flow signal. It is thought that this flow occurred in the Tar River valley but this has yet to be confirmed. Rockfall activity had subsided by 2 am. Since then there have been a number of hybrid earthquakes, some of which were of moderate size.

The volcano is free of cloud this morning and has a very diffuse plume, there is little visible ash venting.

Residents are reminded to remain alert and listen to ZJB radio for further information.
