Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 6 pm 8 February
to 6 pm 9 February 1998

The activity at the volcano has been at about the same level as that experienced yesterday. Rockfalls remain the dominant seismic signals although there were a few more hybrids and long period earthquakes than yesterday.. Between 16:00 yesterday and 16:00 today there were 23 hybrid earthquakes, 31 long period earthquakes, 4 volcano-tectonic earthquakes and 50 distinct rockfall signals.

Visual observations of the dome were not possible due to low cloud and ash.

Dust levels at all monitoring sites were low today except for one site in Woodlands where it was raised. Ashy conditions improved during the day due to heavy rainfall which fell in the late afternoon.

People should remain alert and listen to Radio Montserrat for further information.
