Daily Report
Report for the period 6 pm 27 January
to 6 pm 28 January 1998

Seismic activity remained relatively low today although there was an increase in the number of rockfalls. Between 16:00 yesterday and 16:00 today there was 2 hybrid earthquakes, 2 volcano-tectonic earthquakes and 50 rockfall signals. The rockfalls occurred throughout the day with no definite peaks in activity. However, there was one period of near continuos rockfalls which started at about 10 pm last night and lasted for thirty-five minutes

Observations of the volcano from the helicopter today indicate that the area of dome growth remains in the Galways area with several large blocks observed on the talus slope. Light ashfalls was reported in Salem and Woodlands today. This was due to the increase in rockfall activity coupled with the wind direction.

A long occupation GPS survey was undertaken between Harris Lookout and Old Town - the results are currently being processed. The results of the survey carried out yesterday between Harris Lookout and Tar River did not show any major changes from established trends.

Dust levels at all monitoring stations were low today.

People should remain alert and listen to Radio Montserrat for further information.
