Morning Report
Report for the period 6 pm 21 January
to 7 am 22 January 1998

Rockfall signals have dominated the seismic records during the overnight period, with a distinct peak in activity at around 2 am this morning. There was very little real earthquake activity. The rockfall activity pattern over the past few days has begun to show some cyclicity, and we will be watching this cyclicity very carefully as it gives an indication of when more or less active periods are likely at the volcano.

Although outwardly quiet, the lava dome is still growing rapidly in the crater left after the Boxing Day eruption on the southwest side of the volcano, and a slow increase in rockfall and pyroclastic flow activity can be expected in the days and weeks ahead.
