Daily Report
Report for the period 6 pm 19 January
to 6 pm 20 January 1998

Today activity has been at a slightly elevated level. There were two periods of semi-continuous rockfall activity - between 8 o'clock last night and 4 o'clock this morning and between 12 o'clock and 2 o'clock this afternoon. These rockfalls occurred down the White River Valley to the south of the volcano and, this afternoon, caused an ash plume to rise to approximately 5000 feet. Between 16:00 yesterday and 16:00 today there were 17 hybrid earthquakes, 121 rockfall signals, 20 long-period and 3 volcano tectonic earthquakes.

Dust levels at the monitoring stations across the island were low today, except for at the Catholic Primary School in Palm Loop. Dust levels here were slightly raised - probably largely because of high human activity in the area and a nearby main road.

People should remain alert and listen to Radio Montserrat for further information.
