Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 6 pm 14 January
to 6 pm 15 January 1998

Seismic activity at the volcano today has again been low. Between 16:00 yesterday and 16:00 today there were 9 hybrid earthquakes, 23 rockfall signals, no long-period earthquakes and 5 volcano-tectonic earthquakes.

Visibility has been poor today, and no good views of the dome were obtained.

A GPS survey of sites around the volcano was completed today. The sites measured were at Harris, Whites, Long Ground, Windy Hill and Brodericks. These data will be processed later and results will be reported later in the week.

Results from a deposit of survey of the lower part of the White River valley are now available. The volume increase due to the event on December 26 is 30 million cubic metres. The upper part of the valley and the amount of material below sea level are still to be surveyed.

Dust levels at all of the monitoring stations across the island were low today.

People should remain alert and listen to Radio Montserrat for further information.
