Morning Report
Report for the period 6 pm 6 November
to 7 am 7 November 1997

Following the large dome collapse which occurred yesterday afternoon a new hybrid earthquake swarm began at 18:30 yesterday evening. This swarm continued until around 02:00 this morning. Since then seismicity has been dominated by elevated tremor on all stations. It is likely that this tremor is associated with rapid re-growth of the dome.

The high level of seismicity at the moment means there is a high possibility of more pyroclastic flows, which could travel down Ghauts on the northern flank of the volcano. In addition, there is a high chance that the volcano will start having explosions again. In these conditions Friths, Old Towne and Salem are not safe places to live.

In the event of an explosion or ashfall residents are reminded that they should not attempt to drive, but should get indoors and remain under the shelter of a strong roof. Residents should also wear a dust mask if there is ash in the air. Everyone is advised to remain alert and keep listening to Radio Montserrat for any new information.
