Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Morning Report
Report for the period 6 pm 1 November
to 7 am 2 November 1997

Seismicity from the volcano overnight has been dominated by a hybrid earthquake swarm. The swarm which began at 5:00 pm yesterday evening lasted for over 12 hours ending at around 5:00 am this morning. This continues the trend, observed in the past few days, of hybrid earthquake swarms increasing in length. Seismicity since 5:00 am this morning has been dominated by rockfall signals. Pyroclastic flows are likely during the day.

More pyroclastic flows, at least as big as those seen yesterday, can be expected today. There is also a chance that the volcano will start having explosions again. In these conditions Friths, Old Towne and Salem are not safe places to live. Everyone is advised to remain alert and keep listening to Radio Montserrat for any new information.
