The Volcanic Explanation
For The 24 Hour Period Ending 7 AM On Monday February 03, 1997
A Presentation Of The Government Information Services
In Conjunction With The MVO.

Over the last 24 hours there has been low level rockfall activity at the Soufriere Hills Volcano together with swarms of volcano - tectonic earthquakes.

There was also a period of high amplitude volcanic tremor which produced some ash and from the helicopter it looked as if this was centred above Castle Peak. Small quantities of highly fluid lava occassionally flowed from the area.

Overnight the activity slightly increased and this morning there have been pyroclastic flows. Unfortunately the wind is blowing to the west and ash is being blown over a wide area of Plymouth, Corkhill, Delvins, Isles Bay, Old Towne, Olveston and Salem.
