Date: Mon, 13 Mar 1995 10:53:38 MST From: Global Volcanism NetworkSubject: Aoba (Ambae), Vanuatu: increased activity & evacuations Aoba (Ambae) Ambae Island, Vanuatu 15.40 S, 167.83 E; summit elev. 1,496 m A situation report from the United Nations Department of Humanitarian Affairs stated that activity at Aoba has consisted of a "large steam-burst" and seismicity in early March. An evacuation of communities within 10 km of the crater was ordered on 8 March, affecting 2,000-3,000 people. Aviation restrictions have been posted because of the possibility of an eruption (below). See the last GVN Bulletin (Jan 1995) for a report about seismicity of early December and an aerial survey that noticed areas of hot water in the crater lake and burned rainforest around the crater. GVN has not yet received a report from ORSTOM volcanologists in Vanuatu confirming this increased steaming and seismic activity.
