- El Chichon, Mexico: An example of
a very large eruption in a tropical atmosphere.
Two images are compared to illustrate the progression of a
cloud with high optical depth to low optical depth.
- Klyuchevskoi, Kamchatka: An example
of a "typical" volcanic eruption in a sub-arctic atmosphere. The cloud
from this eruption crossed polar air routes and was potenially hazardous
to aircraft.
- Rabaul Caldera, Papua New Guinea: An example
of an a typical volcanic cloud in which the spectral signiture was dominated
by ice, instead of silicates.
- Crater Peak/Mt. Spurr, Alaska: An example of
a moderate sized eruption cloud which was transported in the jet stream from
Alaska over Canada and the United States.
