METEOR-3 TOMS OBSERVATIONS OF RABAUL ERUPTION PLUME

Meteor-3 TOMS overflew the eruption plume from Rabaul, New Britain
at 5:03am GMT on September 21, 1994. Preliminary results show SO2 column
amounts up to a maximum of ~100 matm-cm in the vicinity of the volcanoes.
The SO2 has most probably been produced since the last TOMS overflight on
the previous day as the small plume noted then would have either dispersed
on been chemically converted in 24 hours. The estimated size of the SO2 plume
is 50,000km^2. SO2 mass in the plume estimated at 70,000 tonnes +/- 50%.
