            INDONESIA - MT. MERAPI VOLCANIC ERUPTION
               DHA-GENEVA INFORMATION REPORT NO. 2

SITUATION
---------

1.  LATEST REPORTS INDICATE 37 DEAD AND 85 SEVERELY INJURED (46
CRITICALLY).  15 HOUSES TOTALLY DESTROYED, 25 SEVERELY DAMAGED.
6,000 PEOPLE EVACUATED.  HOWEVER, DUE TO HEAT FROM PYROCLASTIC
FLOW, LOCAL AUTHORITIES HAVE NOT YET BEEN ABLE TO THOROUGHLY
ASSESS CASUALTIES/DAMAGE.

2.  INDONESIAN VULCANOLOGISTS RECOMMEND THAT A 10 KM-LONG AREA
ALONG RIVER BOYONG BE EVACUATED IN CASE OF FURTHER LARGE ERUP-
TION.

3.  SINCE RIVER BOYONG FLOWS INTO RIVER CODE IN PROVINCIAL
CAPITAL OF YOGYAKARTA, RESIDENTS ALONG RIVER CODE HAVE BEEN
WARNED TO STAY ALERT AND TAKE PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES DUE TO
POSSIBILITY OF COLD LAHAR FLOW.

4.  CLEAN WATER FACILITIES BEING PROVIDED TO AFFECTED AREAS.
FIELD KITCHENS HAVE BEEN SET UP FOR EVACUEES.  INDONESIAN SEARCH
AND RESCUE TEAMS CONTINUING SEARCH FOR MISSING PEOPLE.

5.  PRESIDENT VISITED AFFECTED AREAS 26 NOVEMBER.  COORDINATING
MINISTER FOR PEOPLE'S WELFARE PROVIDED 50 MILLION RUPIAHS TO
ASSIST AFFECTED POPULATION.

6.  WHO PLANNING TO DEPLOY PLASTIC SURGEONS TO ASSIST LOCAL
HOSPITALS WITH PLASTIC SURGERY.  JAPANESE GOVT DISPATCHING
GROUP OF MEDICAL ADVISORS.  PLASTIC SURGERY URGENTLY REQUIRED TO
SAVE LIVES OF CRITICALLY BURNED PEOPLE.

8.  SINCE DAMAGE PRESENTLY CONCENTRATED IN VILLAGE OF TURGO,
DISTRICT OF SLEMAN, UNDP/DHA RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORTS THAT
LOCAL AUTHORITIES ARE MANAGING SITUATION WELL.  TO DATE, INDO-
NESIAN GOVT HAS NOT APPEALED FOR FURTHER INTERNATIONAL ASSIST-
ANCE.  UNDP/DHA RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE IN CLOSE CONTACT WITH
GOVT AND MONITORING SITUATION.

DHA-GENEVA, AS INDICATED BELOW, OF BILATERAL RELIEF MISSIONS/
