To get to the summit of San Miguel volcano you have to take the Pan American highway east to the city of San Miguel. At approximately 130 km take the exit south to the small town of Las Placitas. About three quarters of the way up to Las Placitas there is a small school and next to it an entrance to Finca Santa Isabel. Permission from the administrator of the property should be obtained before entering.
A small coffee plantation road winds its way up to about 1700 m, however a 4wd vehicle is recommended. Leave the car at the end of the road and follow the well beaten path up to the summit. Precaution is required near the top due to a very steep slope and a cover of loose scoria, which makes the ascent very treacherous.
