ALASKA VOLCANOES UPDATE
Friday, January 12, 1996 12:00 AST (21:00 UTC)

Following observations last week of a large steam plume emanating from Shishaldin Volcano on Unimak Island in the eastern Aleutians, AVO has been monitoring AVHRR satellite images of the volcano. Since January 5, an intermittent "hot spot" has been detected near the summit. This feature had not been noted recently at Shishaldin. It is possible that the thermal anomaly reflects unusually high temperatures in the vicinity of the continuously active fumaroles in the summit crater. AVO has received no additional pilot reports or other observations of eruptive activity at Shishaldin.
