Personal Statement
- Powerful remote sensing techniques have become available in the
last several years that facilitate the study of large-scale processes in
difficult environments. Whereas oceanographers have been the primary
users of remote sensing and now routinely use remotely sensed data to
monitor physical and biological properties of ocean waters, few limnologists
have used this tool to study large lakes. The work of the students and
faculty in the satellite limnology group is aimed at advancing the use of
remotely sensed data to study lake properties. Satellite reconnaissance of
lakes forms an important complement to traditional limnologic (ship-based)
research methods.

Research
- EEGLE - Episodic Events-Great Lakes Experiment or the impact of episodic
events on the nearshore-offshore transport and transformation of biogeochemically
important materials in the Great Lakes
- KITES - Keweenaw Interdisciplanry Transport Experiment in Superior
- remote sensing of lake properties - visible and thermal infrared remote
sensing, lake optical properties, scientific data visualization, and
numerical modeling
- image processing, statistical modeling, and laboratory
experiments are utilized to study surface temperatures, suspended sediments
and chlorophyll concentrations in the Great Lakes
