James A. Fegan '57
Inducted into the Academy 1996
Jim began his career in 1957 as a geologist at US Steel in Hibbing,
Minnesota. Four years later, he began a 33 year career with Cleveland
Cliffs Iron Company rising through the ranks from geologist to
operating engineer, pit superintendent, plant superintendent, and
finally, general manager. During his tenure, he worked at the
Humboldt, Republic, Tilden, and Empire Mines. Currently, Jim is a
self-employed senior consultant.
Jim is very active in the community. He is an active member in his
church; a former member and past President of the Ely Township Board of
Education; former member and past President of NICE Community Schools
Board of Education; member of the Board of Directors of the NICE
Community Schools Scholarship Foundation; member of the W. K. Kellogg
Foundation Site Advisory Council for Alger and Marquette Counites;
volunteer in the W. K. Kellogg Foundation Positive Youth Initiatives
Program in West Marquette County; member of the Groundwater Advisory
Committee, GEM project, Marquette County Health Department; member
Greater Ishpeming and Marquette County Commissions on Aging; and member
and past chairman of the Upper Peninsula Section of the American
Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers.
Jim received his BS in Geological Engineering from Michigan
Technological University in 1957.
