Seiches and Tides

Oceans have tides, caused by gravitational forces of the moon and sun.  These forces do not affect Lake Superior, but changes in the lake level do occur, especially during windy and stormy periods and in bays where water may be piled up by strong winds. This pile up oscillates as water builds up and eventually releases.

Oscillations of the seiche are proportional to the distance from edges of the lake.
