Croatians were a significant group of immigrants that came to Calumet. There may have been as many as 2000 at one point. Many lived in boarding houses with their fellow Croats. Slovenians were also abundant, and both groups were called Austrians. There was a Croatian Church and many Croatian cultural features in Calumet. Povitica, a Croatian walnut bread, is still baked daily and sold to many. The Croatian block may have been operated as a boarding house for countrymen and is located opposite the Italian Hall at 7th and Elm.
