Santiaguito Volcano

Yvonne Branan

My trip to Santiaguito Volcano in January of 2003 included a team of scientists from University of Hawai’i, Instituto Nacional de Sismologia, Vulcanologia, Meteorologia e Hidrologia (INSIVUMEH) and Michigan Technological University, who gathered there for one week measuring several different parameters, including seismic, thermal, infrasound, and SO2 emissions.  This trip gave us access to a COSPEC for correlation purposes and we spent several days taking data with both instruments side-by-side.  From this, we expect to be able to cross-correlate the two instruments for comparison purposes.  After this initial week, I spent the following 3 weeks at Santiaguito alone, continuing to gather SO2 and thermal data.  This data is a continuous record (with measurements taken approximately every second) of both data sets and is expected to reveal a tremendous amount of information.  Initial results show excellent correlation between the two data sets.  I have plans to return to Santiaguito in January of 2004.
