Many buildings in Calumet are built using the locally quarried rock from near Jacobsville, only 18 miles S. The Jacobsville Redstone was popular for buildings all over the midwest from about 1885-1910, a time of robust industry in the Keweenaw.  The sandstone is sculpted and shaped into churches and other public and private buildings.
