God and the Mines

Churches (and Bars) are abundant in Calumet and other mining communities. Hard, dangerous work may encourage devotion to God.  The ethnic and language diversity of immigrant peoples also meant that similar denominations might want different churches.

So there were several Catholic churches (St Anne’s (French) St Mary’s (Italian), St John’s (Croatian) and St Joseph’s (originally Slovenian) in Red Jacket. Also churches competed for their congregations by building impressive structures which communicated serious power and perhaps reassurance.
